You Only Need to Get One Thing Right

Management, marketing, and business are prone to clutter. It’s so tempting to jump on the next trend, to embrace the newest tactic. But the truth is, in business, you only need to get one thing right. It has to be something people care about, and it has to knock people’s socks off, but it only has to be one thing. One thing that you do better than anybody else. One thing that none of your competitors have. That’s all it takes to ensure that your business has a reason to exist, and hence, that it will continue to do so.

There is no such thing as failure. Failed startups and product ideas are learning experiences. Failed marketing strategies teach us what we should do next. Failures don’t count against you. And it only takes one success story to become a success.


Luck is the most underrated thing in business. We backward justify everything. Gurus and CEOs can point to the decisions they’ve made and explain how those choices and that effort is why they succeeded. For the vast majority of them, they were wrong. The reason they were successful is because they got lucky. They had the right idea at the right time, and they had the right circumstances to make the idea into a reality.

Luck is outside of your control, but opportunities aren’t. When the odds are 1 in 1000, the math is easy. If you want to succeed, you need to try 1000 times.

Steve Jobs’s Apple I and II computers made only hundreds of sales, he was fired from Apple over the Lisa computer, and his NeXT computer company was a complete failure. And then he gave us the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

If there is only one business lesson you take to heart, this is it. Keep trying.
